FAQ
[Questions when you have already purchased VOCALOID and are using it]
Q1. How can I arrange notes, scale, length, dynamics, and tempo?
A1. You can input all items in the piano-roll window which has a horizontal time axis and a vertical scale axis. The dynamics can be modified by assigning symbols such as p (piano) and f (forte) in the piano roll. By changing synthesis parameters along the horizontal time axis, it is possible to vary voice timbre across time.
Q2. How can I add expression to my song?
A2. The expression such as attack, vibrato, and dynamics can be added on the piano roll of the VOCALOID Editor by dragging and dropping the appropriate icons from the VOCALOID Icon Palette.
Q3. Is it possible to import a standard MIDI file (SMF) created with other DTM software?
A3. Yes, it is possible to import the melody through a SMF. After importing the melody, you can add lyrics by using the VOCALOID Editor.
Q4. Is it possible to synthesize singing that does not conform to 12 equal temperament, for example, in a pure temperament? Is it also possible to make glissandos?
A4. By using the Pitch Bend, you can synthesize vocal sounds that are out of equal temperament. You also can make glissandos with the Pitch Bend controls.
Q5. Is it possible to make VOCALOID speak, instead of sing?
A5. It is possible to synthesize the spoken word by inputting notes and pitch bend to represent the intonation, but it is not easy to create the complex intonation curve by hand. Please note that VOCALOID is a system for mainly synthesizing songs.
Q6. How can I enter English lyrics?
A6. When you sing an English song, you may notice that a single word with one syllable corresponds to single note, while one with multiple syllables is sung across several notes, one syllable per note. One syllable also can be sung across multiple notes.

In case of Ver 1.0:

A word with one syllable can be entered in one note. (For example, "love", "I", "you", "dog", "see")

For a word with two or more syllables, you need to put notes to the number of syllables and type hyphen(-) following the syllable that needs to connect to a syllable on the following note.

In case of Ver 1.1, once you enter a word with multiple syllables, the word will be automatically divided into syllables and transformed into phoneme data if there are enough notes afterwards. Click Here to download VOCALOID updater ver1.1.0.

Q7. I've heard it takes a long time to synthesize vocals.
A7. If you apply VOCALOID updater ver1.1.0, you can save time by setting Play mode for each track. Select "Play with Synthesis" mode for tracks you are still editing and select "Play After Synthesis" mode for tracks you have finished. Please click Here to see tips for Play mode.
Q8. Is it possible to introduce a song created by VOCALOID as a sample?
A8. If the song does not have a problem on the copyright and any matters, you can put your songs on the Internet.
Q9. The manual says that 2GB RAM is recommended, but what would happen if the PC has less than 2GB RAM?
A9. If the CPU load is particularly high, playback of VOCALOID VST instrument is intermittent. However, by setting "Play After Synthesis" mode, reducing the number of tracks, or closing other software, the intermittent problem will be reduced.
Q10. When I am using Cubase while VOCALOID is not used, the window "Initializing VOCALOID" appears and the work is stopped.
A10. Change the name of "vocaloiddevice.dll" to another name, which exists in the folder with VOCALOID installed (usually in C:\Program Files\VOCALOID) or move "vocaloiddevice.dll" to other folder. However, after this coping process, VOCALOID with ReWire does not work. If you want to use VOCALOID with ReWire again, change back to the name "vocaloiddevice.dll" or move "vocaloiddevice.dll" back to the original folder.
Q11. For offline activation, any machine's name is not displayed in the window "Select the device to identify this PC".
A11. Download VOCALOID ver1.1.1 updater, apply it, and try the offline activation again.
Q12. To completely uninstall VOCALOID, how can I backup the settings of the Singer list?
A12. Unfortunately, the settings of the Singer list cannot be backupped.
Q13. The OS which is connected to the Net is "win98SE", but the offline activation fails.
A13. Since Win98SE uses IE4.0 as a default, we assume that the process is not well-done. You need to update the browser to the latest version.
Q14. The error message "Cannot open Synthesis Engine!" appears when I try to run VOCALOID. Then, when I click [OK], VOCALOID Editor is closed.
A14. You need to apply the latest updater.
Q15. The error message "Cannot open Synthesis Engine!" appears when I try to run VOCALOID. Then, when I click [OK], VOCALOID Editor is closed.
A15. It may happen when you make VOCALOID sing fast. By setting the Consonant Adjustment parameter a small value (like 10), the consonant time becomes shorter, and the pronunciation becomes like the score entered. You can edit it by opening the Phoneme Edit window, selecting the note, and pressing the [setup].
Q16. When I try to install VOCALOID in a PC with programs in another drive, the installation fails. Although the installer's pass is changed, it mandatorily takes the default pass.
A16. Usually, VOCALOID can be installed in a drive other than C: drive, but the files are temporarily uncompressed in C: drive. Therefore, if C: drive has no enough space, the installation of VOCALOID to other drive may be failed. If so, change the environment variable by performing the following procedure so that VOCALOID can be installed even though there is not enough space in C: drive.

1. From the control panel:
(a) Select "Performance and maintenance" -> "System" (in case of XP)
(b) Select "System" (When the control panel is set as "classic display" in Win2000 and/or XP)

2. Select "Detailed setting" tab

3. Select "Environment variable"

4. Move the variable TEMP and/or TMP from C: drive folder to other drive folder (for both user environmental variable and system variable)

Information related to VOCALOID may be written in the registry file, it is desirable to delete all registry files related to VOCALOID before reinstalling.

Q17. When I use FLSTUDIO for ReWire (TM) and play VOCALOID, it generates noise.
A17. If both VOCALOID and FL Studio are used together, ReWire may not work well. We recommend that you use Cubase instead for ReWire.
